AFC Wimbledon to review FA Trophy debacle

AFC Wimbledon chairman Erik Samuelson has confirmed the club will carry out a review into the administrative debacle that saw them booted out of the FA Trophy.

After a FA hearing last Thursday the Kingsmeadow club were removed from the FA Trophy for fielding an ineligible player, Jermaine Darlington, in the victory over Nationwide Conference side Gravesend & Northfleet.

The club's administrative staff were required to gain the necessary international clearance from the Welsh Football Association for Darlington after he joined from Cardiff City last year - even though the Bluebirds play in the English Championship.

In conventional circumstances it would be down to the club secretary, who in this case is Trevor Williams, to complete all the paperwork to obtain international clearance.

It is believed that Mr Williams is one of only five paid officers at the club.

In addition to being thrown out of the FA Trophy the club has also been ordered to repay the £5,000 prize money from the Gravesend & Northfleet match and the £7,000 prize fund from earlier rounds, including the 2-1 victory over Aldershot, where Darlington also played.

Samuelson said: "We are going to carry out a review and we will make sure there's some sort of independence in that review.

"We want to understand what went wrong and when we've got the facts we need to look at the overall situation. Until then there's no need to jump to conclusions."
