One of the county's biggest wedding fairs, due to be held at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Sunday, had to be called off at the last moment due to continued safety fears over its damaged roof.

The Wedding Fair was due to take place in the undamaged Queen’s Stand, not the adjacent Duchess' Stand which has a large section of its roof ripped off in last week's gales, and is the biggest wedding fair in Surrey with hundreds of brides-to-be and around 70 exhibitors expected.

The racecourse and the organisers, Celebrated Affairs, announced the postponement of the event on Thursday following advice from construction experts and council safety officers.

Earlier last week the racecourse had said the Queen's Stand would be unaffected and all events planned at the Duchess' Stand would be transferred to the Queen’s Stand.

But a statement on its website on Thursday said: "it has been decided that until a full survey has taken place, no public events should take place on the racecourse".

A racecourse spokesperson said this morning: “The wedding fair was cancelled as we needed to make a speedy decision due to the number of people involved and at the time the decision was made no one had been able to gain access to the roof to ascertain the extent of the damage, therefore in the interests of safety we unfortunately had to cancel the event.”

Celebrated Affairs said: “The wedding Fair at Epsom Downs Racecourse has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

People should refer back to our website for further information.

We will have a new date for Epsom on Tuesday morning, January 10.”

Disappointed brides-to-be should check celebratedaffairs.co.uk for confirmation of the new date.
