Caroline Anns-Baldock will bring traffic to a halt in central London as she rides her bright chestnut racehorse down Whitehall towards Downing Street.

The 62-year-old former jockey is guaranteed to turn heads – she will be dressed as Lady Godiva who earned a place in the history books with her naked ride through the streets of Coventry 900 years ago.

But bearing in mind that autumn days can be chilly Caroline has voted to wear a nude body stocking and like the original Lady Godiva, is relying on her long hair to preserve her modesty.

Mrs Anns-Baldock who was one of England’s first three professional female flat jockeys, and who keeps a racehorse at Downs House on Epsom Downs, has worked in the horse world all her life.

She is determined a special museum will be set up to celebrate the horse.

She has put in years of dedicated work to the cause and decided someone with some political clout was needed to give the project a boost.

So on Saturday, September 26, she will be riding her horse Smelly towards Downing Street although it is not certain whether she will be allowed to ride right to the front door of No 10.

She said: “I said I would do it as Lady Godiva as a joke and then it took over. The police have been very nice about it and said I could do it.”

She will be accompanied by Lucinda McAlpine, a dressage rider and expert on horses and Colin Henderson, ex-head coachman of the Royal Mews who will hand a petition into Downing Street.

“We are looking for a suitable property for the museum and when we have found one we will get a feasibility study done, hopefully with money from the lottery.

“We want to set up a Museum of the Horse here in the UK. We are the only European country without one to honour the contribution of horses to our society, and yet we are known throughout the world as the home of horse-loving people.”
