Generous readers help disabled Wandsworth rescue cat

Generous readers have already pledged £500 to help save a cat who was born without eyelids.

Danny, a three-month-old shorthaired tabby cat, was born with no top eyelids - a rare condition which leaves him with hair in his eyes, causing him constant pain and discomfort.

Last week his Battersea owners approached the Wandsworth Borough News for help in raise £3,000 needed to pay for a pioneering operation and other costs.

If they do not raise the cash Danny might have to be put to sleep.

Joseph Stantejsky and his wife Victoria, who live in Wakehurst Road and have already re-homed 175 cats this year, took Danny to a specialist in Caterham, Surrey, who said she could perform the operation - involving grafting skin to the top of his eyes to act as eyelids.

But Danny cannot have the operation until he is six months old, and needs other treatments and costly eyedrops until then.

The couple said they were overwhelmed by readers’ response but more was needed.

Mr Stantejsky said: “We have had a great response from your readers which is wonderful. We have received £500 but we need a little more.”

Mrs Stantejsky added Danny was depressed by his condition but was very affectionate.

“He’s very emotionally responsive. He purrs all the time and, but for his eyelids, he would be fine,” she said. “We would like to help him if at all possible.”

Anyone who wants to help can contact the couple by email at animalrescue@hotmail.co.uk.
