More than 250 allegations of sexual abuse at football clubs across London are being probed by the Metropolitan Police, with all five Premier League clubs believed to be being investigated.

The Met has released a statement confirming that 255 cases of abuse at London clubs have been reported to the force, with 77 teams under scrutiny.

Detectives have refused to name the clubs, though it is believed Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and West Ham are all involved.

Three Championship clubs, three League One and League Two clubs and 66 other teams are also being investigated.

Millwall has already been named as one of the clubs under investigation.

Detective chief superintendent Ivan Balhatchet, of the sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command, said: "The Met take all allegations seriously, and specialist officers will work through the information passed to them.

"Anyone who has been the victim of sexual assault should contact their local force, or call the NSPCC help line on 0800 023 2642."

The football sex abuse scandal first came to light after a number of high-profile footballers came forward last year.

An inquiry was launched into allegations of abuse at football clubs across the country soon after, with more than 1,000 referrals made to the police.
