The chilli sauce was not the hottest thing in a Norbury kebab shop when firefighters were called to a fire there last night.

Three fire engines went to the premises in London Road, near the train station, at about 8pm and put the flames out on the barbecue grill fairly quickly.

They turned off the gas supply to the grill and used a thermal imaging camera to check the flues and cowling were safe.

A fire investigation team discovered the cause was a defective barbecue grill.

Nick Morley, the red watch crew manager from Norbury fire station, said: "It looked spectacular but was relatively minor."
