Rapid clean-up on the M25 following a collision prevented further major traffic disruption on the road last night.

The collision took place shortly before 11pm on the east-bound inside lane between Junction 9, Leatherhead, and Junction 10, with oil spilling across the carriageway.

Emergency services were swiftly on the scene of the two-car smash and were able to rapidly remove wreckage and reopen the lane.

According to Surrey Police two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Surrey Ambulance Service, who attended, said a car had struck the central reservation.

Surrey Fire Service and Rescue also sent an engine and a spokesman said one vehicle seriously damaged.

He said: "There was a fuel spillage which leaked all over the road. One fire engine was called out and it was more of a case of cleaning-up."

University student Trisha Seecharran, who was driving home at the time, said: "I saw signs overhead indicating that there was one lane closed as I was heading towards the Junction 10 exit. As I drove past I saw there was one vehicle which was blocking the entire inside lane of the carriageway and the front and side of the car looked completely wrecked. I'm surprised there wasn't any major disruptions caused by the wreckage. It was shocking to see."

There was chaos on the M25 last Friday when overnight roadworks near Junction 9 led to a hole appearing in the carriageway, triggering a day of disruption.
