A petition has been launched to save a group of care homes under threat of closure.

Dormers Care Home in Caterham would be one of those affected by the plans by Surrey County Council, alongside homes in Ottershaw, Farnham, Cranleigh, Reigate and Camberley.

The potential closure, suggested for 2016, comes following a Surrey County Council report published last month that deemed the buildings as unable to meet today’s standards of accommodation.

Officers who compiled the report state rebuilding would cost an estimated £50m-£60m.

A consultation period, allowing members of the public to voice their opinions to the council, is running until December 19, and a public meeting is being organised by Caterham on the Hill Parish Council.

Deborah Boon, whose father John Boon, 80, has lived in Dormers Care Home for 10 years, said his mood has “plummeted” since learning of the potential closure.

She said: “Sadly it is always on his mind. It will mean a complete change of environment, and I don’t want him to move away from Caterham, an area that he has lived in for 30 years, to a place where he won’t know the town or staff.

“On top of that there is a big risk he won’t be understood or cared for like he is at Dormers because the level of care he has now is unbeatable.”

The closure of Dormers, Foxon Lane, would see the displacement of 24 residents and the loss of nine full-time and 41 part-time jobs.

A council spokesman said: “The most important thing is to make sure older people receive the very best care.

“We’re helping many more people stay in their own homes until much later in life and increasingly they need round-the-clock nursing when they do go into care.

“Our ageing homes are finding it harder and harder to provide this, which is why we’re asking people for their views.”
