Alex Bremer, 49, from Battersea, was coming out of the station, on June 23, when his wife was approached by a beggar asking for money.

Mr Bremer, company director of digital agency 3B Digital, asked the man to leave her alone when he was punched on the jaw.

A man was charged with common assault and was due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on October 3, but Mr Bremer turned up only to be told by court staff the case had been dropped.

He contacted police and found out the case had been dropped because the Crown Prosecution Service claimed the police had not given them his interview.

The police, on the other hand, claimed they had sent it, both by email and fax.

He said: “I have no idea who to believe. All I know is I was told to turn up at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court, only to be told they had dropped the case. I’m fairly annoyed. I had to give up a day of work, but this character is effectively still at large.”

Mr Bremer said his jaw hurt following the incident and made it difficult to eat.

Mr Bremer said he had recently had correspondence with the police and learned they were considering re-opening the case.

In April police issued a warning that beggars were preying on people at the station.

They reported how one offender admitted he regularly travelled to the station to fund his heroin addiction.

The CPS said that it was investigating the matter.
