An eight-year-old girl has named the Thames river barge that helped remove the Battersea Power Station cranes.
The cranes before their removal
An event today (Tuesday, October 21) officially named the river barge The Battersea Power.
The winning entry was submitted by Maryam Ali, eight, from Chesterton Primary School. Her choice was to reflect all the history that the Power Station had in London and the power it had given to the whole town when fully functioning.
Three primary schools took part in a competition to name the barge - St George’s, St Mary’s RC and Chesterton and Griffin Primary School.
The barge is transporting the historic jetty cranes from Battersea to Tilbury for refurbishment and temporary storage.
The event was attended by the Secretary of State for Communities Eric Pickles and Richard Tracey, the London Assembly member for Wandsworth and the Mayor’s ambassador for river transport. The ceremony featured a bottle smashing on the barge.
Mr Pickles said: "This is an exciting time for Battersea, central London’s biggest regeneration zone, and it is great these iconic cranes will be as much a part of Battersea’s future as its illustrious past."
Mr Tracey helped judge the competition and added: "I selected the entry because it had strong reference to the power station building and its heritage but also reflected the strength of the barge."
