Governors, parents and politicians are disappointed after the council rejected a petition calling for a zebra crossing outside a Tooting school.

Glenburnie Road, near Fircroft Primary School

The petition, signed by 172 people in just one week, was handed to the council in February after concerns were raised about children travelling to and from Fircroft Primary School via Glenburnie Road.

But calls for a crossing were rejected at the community services overview and scrutiny committee on Thursday, September 25.

Furzedown Councillor Leonie Cooper also called for alternative measures including improvements to the 20mph signage, building out kerbs and road studs to slow the traffic down to be reconsidered at the next full council meeting on October 16.

Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, said: "Everyone involved in the campaign knows how dangerous Glenburnie Road can be and how much the crossing is needed, but it is incredibly frustrating that the council is refusing to listen.

"In the meantime I will be working with the school and local parents to keep the pressure on the council and remind them that we won’t give up until the crossing is installed."

A spokesman for Wandsworth Council said: "We carried out a detailed investigation of traffic and pedestrian conditions at two locations outside the school which found that the existing school safety zone is working well and that the area's 20mph speed limit is being obeyed by drivers.

"The school has also been allocated a dedicated lollipop patroller.

"We will continue to monitor the situation but the successful measures already introduced by the council to improve safety and cut vehicle speeds means this location simply does not meet the nationally set guidelines for the installation of a zebra crossing."
