A nursery has been closed temporarily over an investigation into 'safeguarding concerns'.

Ofsted has temporarily suspended its registration to give time to investigate.

Police said they received an allegation about a nursery in Kingston on Friday. There have been no arrests.

A spokesman for Active Learning Kingston in Victoria Road said only that it had informed parents by email and in person last night about today's indefinite closure.

A parent of a child at the nursery said: “The communication has been extremely badly handled. The parents are getting a feeling of complete stone-walling.

"You’ve got 100-plus kids that have been massively let down."

Rajan Giritharan, a father-of-three from New Malden whose youngest son goes to the nursery, said: "I'm a bit concerned. It could be anything. It could be health and safety or they have employed somebody without checking.

"If it has gone to police it can't be trivial. We need to know the nature of the allegation."

Yesterday, parents picking up their children from the nursery were met by a senior principal from the Active Learning chain, who told them the centre may be closed for weeks.

One parent asked on Twitter: "Do you have any info why#ActiveLearningKingston shut down today? Police investigation but no info to parents #Safeguarding"

Active Learning also have nurseries in Chiswick, Crouch End, Dorking, Fulham, Southgate and West Hampstead.

The Kingston branch opened in Victoria Hall in 2008 and is open from 7.30am to 6.30pm 51 weeks a year.

It has a two-storey building with a disabled lift, bathroom, kitchen and staff facilities, three enclosed outdoor play areas and a web cam system in areas where children play, according to its last Ofsted report in 2011.

It is registered for up to 98 children with 23 members of staff.

At its last inspection in 2011 Ofsted inspectors said staff knew how to safeguard children and had a secure understanding of child protection issues but written risk assessments were not reviewed in line with legal requirements due to an 18 months gap between risk assessments.

A spokesman for Kingston Council confirmed the closure and said: "The council will support families in finding alternative childcare."

He said Kingston’s Family Information Service could be contacted on 020 8547 5215 if parents need to arrange alternative childcare.

Anyone who has a concern of a safeguarding nature is asked to contact Kingston’s Single Point of Access team on 020 8547 5008.
