They have been accepted onto a US student programme during which they will be given support with applications to US universities and hopefully funding.

The programme is run jointly by the Sutton Trust and the US-UK Fulbright Commission – which has its UK headquarters in Nine Elms.

The not-for-profit education body moved to Wandsworth in 2010 to establish links ahead of the US Embassy’s relocation to Nine Elms in 2017.

The commission provides youngsters from both countries with opportunities to access higher education on the other side of the Atlantic.

Two Americans will also be studying and conducting research at the University of Roehampton this academic year thanks to the commission.

Sagar said: “I am interested in studying Biochemistry and in the US system undergraduates can have the opportunity to work with some of the top professors."

Cameron said: "I am very excited about going to the US this summer because one of my long term goals is to play volleyball there and I have been looking into playing at American universities.

"I also like the idea that you don't choose just one subject for your undergraduate degree but can study a range of subjects at university.

"We will be visiting universities around Harvard and we also get to watch a Boston Red Sox baseball game, which will be a big highlight for me."
