A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH after a badly injured man was found lying in the road on Saturday night.

The victim sustained head injuries and remains in a serious condition in hospital after he was found in Breech Lane, Walton-on-the-Hill, at about 12.30am on Sunday.

Police have now been told that the victim, believed to be in his 30s, and another man were involved a fight and chase that night.

The arrested man, from Walton-on-the-Hill, remains in custody.

Temporary Detective Inspector Sailesh Limbachia said: "I would like to thank the public for coming forward so quickly following the appeal at the weekend, which means we now have a clearer understanding of the situation.

"However we are still unsure about the circumstances of how the man sustained his injuries.

"We need to hear from anyone who was in the Breech Lane area between 12.15am and 12.30am and who may have seen the two men, either before or after the victim was found in the street.

"It may be that you were on your way home at that time in the morning from a night out and saw what happened, or live nearby and saw something out of the ordinary, if so we urgently need to hear from you."

In the wake of the incident, the victim was taken to St George’s Hospital, in Tooting, and Breech Lane was closed between Chequers Lane and the St Peter Church of England entrance.

Police have examined the scene, reviewed CCTV footage and made house to house enquiries.
