The remains of the monument
A memorial that has stood outside Nonsuch Park since the 1800s has been smashed to pieces after a car crash.
The memorial, which has stood outside the Ewell Road entrance to the park in Cheam since the 19th century, has been reduced to a pile of rubble festooned with police tape following a crash at about 5.40am on Sunday.
Police arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the crash but he was later released without charge.
The monument is a stone cross and drinking fountain built in memory of WF Gamul Farmer by his 11 surviving children.
He and his family lived in Cheam Park House, in Nonsuch Park, in the Victorian era.
