Police are appealing for information following the assault and attempted robbery of a couple on a bus in Streatham.

The 23-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were travelling on the 137 bus from Chelsea Bridge to Streatham Hill on January 1, after a New Year's Eve party.

They were sitting on the top deck of the bus behind the stairs and at some point during the journey fell asleep.

At about 2.30am, they were woken up by a group of six black youths, three males and three females, all aged around 15.

One boy was going through the woman's bag and then a struggle ensued and he tried to escape down the stairs.

Meanwhile, a girl attempted to tug the bag away from the woman and began hitting her around the face and pulling her hair when she wouldn't let go.

The man chased the boy down to the lower deck of the bus to challenge him and was hit over the head with a beer bottle, leaving him with a two inch cut to his head and left ear.

The boy then threatened to stab him before leaving the bus by the central doors. The rest of the group also left the bus and made off in an unknown direction.

The boy had a shaved head, was 5ft 7in tall and wore a black hooded top. The girl was 5ft 4in tall and wore a black coat and her black hair was tied up in two ponytails.
