More time for consultation
Aritist's impression: The new care home plans
Aritist's impression: The new care home plans

The consultation period into controversial Sunbury extra care homes has been extended following pressure from the public.

Spelthorne Council annouced it had decided to extend public discussion for the new Benwell Extra Care Housing and Day Centre from three to nine weeks, after the public felt there was insufficient time to respond.

Portfolio holder for adult and elderly services Councillor Vivienne Leighton said: "This new centre will have pride of place in Sunbury and provide residents with the high quality services that we, and they, want and deserve.

"We do need to be sure that we have looked at every angle and listened to what people are telling us, hence the longer consultation period that we are proposing. I do urge everyone to have their say before June 7."

The council said it had taken comments on board and lengthened it considerably after originally meeting its minimum legal obligations.

The centre will be made up of 39 units of ExtraCare housing offering 24-hour personal care.

Twelve of the flats will be on sale, 15 for shared ownership and 12 will be available for rent of which more than two-thirds will be affordable.

All responses should be sent to deputy chief executive Nigel Lynn at the council offices, Knowle Green, TW18 1XB or they can be emailed to n.lynn@spelthorne.gov.uk.

The planning application for the new centre was received at the beginning of April and plans are available to view at the council offices or at phoenix.spelthorne.gov.uk - type in the planning reference 08/00297/
