A woman has been arrested after a four-car crash in Twickenham.

The crash happened in the early hours of Saturday morning (November 11) in Copthall Gardens, just metres from a junction residents have been campaigning about.

A Met Police spokesman said: “We were called to the scene at 1.24am on November 11 to reports of a road traffic collision involving four vehicles.

“It was reported that a car had crashed into three other vehicles.

“London Ambulance Service was also in attendance.

“A woman was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving at the scene.”

There were no life-threatening injuries.

The Copthall Gardens Residents’ Association is campaigning to prevent plans for what they say could be “deadly” road alterations near the highly populated St Richard Reynolds Catholic College.

The group believe the proposed changes, which include narrowing Clifden Road, adding inset parking to it and removing parking on the bend, will direct more traffic down Copthall Gardens and “risk the lives” of pupils walking in the area.

Member of the Residents’ Association Byron Young said: “They say it’s dangerous to have a blind corner but turning it into a straight road will only result in cars going faster.”

The school currently has 950 students but the figure is expected to rise to 1,500 in the next two years.

On Friday the group presented a petition, signed by everyone on the road bar one, to Twickenham Riverside ward councillors Peter Buckwell and Susan Chappell asking them to rethink the proposed changes.

Mr Young said: “We were just fortunate it was at 2am and not 3pm.

“Thankfully no-one was seriously hurt but it could have been very different.”

Cllr Chappell told Richmond and Twickenham Times the council was working with everyone involved to achieve the “best possible solution”.
