Stalls at the first ever Ham Parade Market sold out within hours last Saturday, with queues for fruit and veg winding down the road.

Zac Goldsmith, MP for Richmond Park, officially launched the market, ringing the opening bell.

The Ham Parade Market Committee said it was delighted with the success of the food and crafts market and hopes it will rejuvenate the area.

Chair Matt Georges said: “The market was everything I hoped it would be and more. There were lots of stalls and shoppers, and the existing businesses on the parade were busier than I've seen them.”

He added: “Hopefully the Ham Parade Market is the first step to revitalising our little high street for the benefit of everyone.”

Some customers shared their enthusiasm on Facebook. Chris Kent said: “Great to see some of the local businesses see an uptake in traffic. There was a queue out of the local bakers at some point. Plenty for the kids to do as well. A much needed boost for the local community.”

Because most customers were local, stallholders are optimistic that they’ll see repeat custom.

This was also a bonus for October’s charity stall – Ham & Petersham SOS – because meeting local people is essential for it's work caring for elderly and disabled residents in the area.

Coordinator Karen King said: “We took £302 in raffle ticket sales and £37 in our donation tin, plus we signed up at least 10 potential volunteers, who are essential to enabling us to provide transport, weekly activities, monthly outings and practical help for our clients.”

Families enjoyed the free children’s activities on offer, with face painting and graffiti spray-painting on canvas by A Family Affair going down a treat.

Although many stalls sold out by 1pm, shoppers stayed to listen to free music provided by covers band 5 Day Weekend.

According to the Ham Parade Market Committee, stalls have been rebooked for the next market on Saturday November 4, with new ones joining the mix.
