Sporting stars from Richmond showed off their talents as they conquered the London Youth Games this month.

Twenty five young people from Team Richmond descended on Redbridge, competing in the Hockey qualifiers and Table Tennis finals.

The Richmond girls’ Hockey team went unbeaten throughout the morning round and only conceded one goal to pip Wandsworth to the automatic qualifying spot thanks to a better goal difference.

Cllr Meena Bond, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Sports, said: “Yet again our young people storm ahead in the London Youth Games.

Victories over Bexley, Hillingdon and Hammersmith & Fulham secured the top spot in the group and they will go on to face seven other boroughs in July to compete for the gold medals and hope to reach the podium and better last year’s 4th place finish.

“Richmond is considered the fittest borough in the country -and, with these young competitors we can see why,” added Cllr Bond.

“Good luck to the hockey players in the finals in July – fingers crossed for gold medals!”

The boys hockey team grasped a narrow 1-0 victory over Kingston securing them a spot to go on and compete for a podium place once again after securing bronze medals at the 2016 finals.

In the Table Tennis finals, two young squads from the borough each played five matches in the morning but couldn’t quite do enough to qualify for the afternoon knockouts.

The girls finished in a very respectable 13th position, with the boys finishing in 21st place against some top nationally ranked players.
