Sir Vince Cable, the newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, said he will use his position to probe the Government on its commitment to Crossrail 2.

Since the elections, MPs have had to wait until the Queen’s Speech was read today (June 21) to be able to begin submitting parliamentary questions.

The MP, who has announced he will stand to be leader after Tim Farron’s resignation, is concerned why the government’s commitment to the new railway line, which connects south west London to north east London, is decreasing.

Mr Cable said: “It is incredibly concerning that a commitment to Crossrail 2 was not mentioned in the last Budget or in the Conservative Party manifesto in the recent General Election.

“It would dramatically improve train services for people in Twickenham, especially people who use Teddington and Hampton Wick train stations

The Lib Dems only secured 7.4% of the vote and 12 seats in the 2017 General Election, however, Sir Vince is determined to ensure his constituency does not suffer from governmental decisions.

“It is bad enough that Richmond missed out on Crossrail 1 over a decade ago and it is vital that past mistakes are not repeated.” The Lib Dem added.

“Twickenham and other parts of south west London desperately need better connections and Crossrail 2 is a vital to that actually happening.

“We cannot afford for the scheme to be delayed or held back.

“It says everything about the Government’s wrong priorities that it is currently planning to rush ahead with a third Heathrow runway but is now blocking Crossrail 2.”
