Sutton Councillors vote against plans to end free pest collections

Rats plans thrown out by Sutton Councillors Rats plans thrown out by Sutton Councillors

Rats and bedbugs will still be removed by Sutton Council free of charge after councillors threw out plans to scrap the service.

At the first meeting of the new Environment and Neighbourhood Committee last week, councillors voted against the plans, which would have saved the council £36,000.

Sutton, Richmond, Kingston, and Epsom and Ewell offer free pest control services whilst Merton, Reigate and Banstead and Croydon charge.

Councillors unanimously voted against the move, with Liberal Democrat Lester Holloway telling the committee, "the negative publicity would outweigh the savings."

Councillor Jill Whitehead, Chairwoman of the Environment and Neighbourhood Committee at Sutton Council, said: "Like any responsible council, we're carefully scrutinising every penny of residents' money we spend, but all the councillors on the committee felt that this was a step too far.

"We were concerned about the impact this could have on some of our residents, and of course there's the fear that it could lead to an increase in pests across the borough."

Conservative Councillor Tony Shields, who sits on the committee, said: "How on earth did this mad cap idea ever get as far as a committee and how much staff time has been spent on coming up with this daft idea in the first place."

Oh dear. Liberal Democrat councillor Lester Holloway has rather shown the true colours of his party.

He is not worried about the cost savings, or the suitability (or not) of the proposals – but is worried that “the negative publicity would outweigh the savings”.

In other words, stuff what Sutton’s residents think – we’ve backtracked simply because of potential bad publicity.

What an astonishingly patronising and insulting approach to local government.

This is a short article and therefore didn't include a lot of things said, including me talking about the fact that infestations of pests like rats can be extremely distressing for those affected. We have to take account of the fears of disease and the safety of children. And any pest infestation that is not dealt with promptly can get a lot worse, and affect even more local residents.

The point about the money was simply this: yes, we need to look for savings but this proposed cut was wrong because (a) it will upset residents (b) it doesn't save that much money anyway. Hopefully that gives a clearer picture of where I was coming from.

I've logged in with the wrong account! Anyway, it's Lester Holloway!

Thank you for commenting Lester. But how on earth did the proposal even get to this stage? That needs some serious explaining.

And since when has upsetting residents been the arbiter of what is right and wrong? A rise in council tax upsets residents, but it doesn’t mean you won’t do it.

I hope the crazy library prayer room idea goes the same way.
