Boris Johnson promised if re-elected as London Mayor he would bring trams to Sutton.
During a visit to Sutton High Street on Tuesday, April 24, Mr Johnson told supporters he would extend the Croydon tramlink service to the borough if re-elected on May 3.
Tim Crowley, deputy leader of the Conservative group on Sutton Council, said: “He told me trams will be coming to Sutton.
“He said he could not guarantee it will be built by 2016, but his plans are to make sure that everything is in place during the next mayoralty.
“After Crossrail it is his next priority, and it will be great for the regeneration of the borough.”
Sutton and Merton Councils last year agreed to support an extension of the Croydon Tramlink.
Both boroughs have been jointly lobbying to secure funding from Transport for London (TfL) and central Government for the scheme.
A campaign spokesman for Mr Johnson said: "We are committed to exploring this option immediately after his election and will be talking with Sutton councillors and other boroughs to sound out the feasibility."
