In light of Scams Awareness Month, Croydon Council’s trading standards officers have compiled a list highlighting how residents can protect themselves from being victimised by online scamming.
Computer hackers use computer viruses to gain access to computers and wireless networks, to scam users and steal their money and identity.
Councilor Mark Watson, cabinet member for communities, safety and justice, said: "Everybody should have up-to-date anti-virus software installed, and it needn’t cost them a lot of money.
"Failing to install such software leaves you vulnerable to con artists operating from anywhere in the world.
"If you think you have uncovered a scam, or have been targeted by, or fallen victim to, a scam, it should be reported directly to Action Fraud online at actionfraud.org.uk or by calling 03001 232040."
