1844 - London's YMCA is founded by George Williams - a draper's assistant who is appalled by conditions many young apprentices live in.

1882 - The electric iron is patented by Henry Seeley.

1907 Persil - the world's first household detergent - is launched.

1936 - Gatwick Airport opens.

2001 - A man from Essex stuns doctors after his heart stops 13 times - and he makes a full recovery.

2005 - Russell Crowe, who starred in Gladiator', is arrested in New York for allegedly throwing a telephone at a hotel employee where he was staying.
