January 24, 2001 15:35: As a teacher years ago, I don't recall any great problems regarding truancy.

In those days, schools were smaller and pupils got down to work in a disciplined atmosphere.

They were proud to wear school uniforms and regarded teachers with respect.

A sharp eye was also kept on the playgrounds in order to prevent bullying.

Have the reforms which are in place today actually made any improvements?

I leave it to future historians of education to judge.
