Inspired by the tragic events surrounding the death of Coulsdon student Meredith Kercher a composer is planning a tribute concert in her honour.

Trevor Jones, who lives in Stroud, Gloucestershire, was so moved by the successful appeal of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito in Perugia, Italy, last month he decided to organise a full concert in Croydon, employing a string quartet from Croydon Music and Arts centre and aspiring singer Freya Jacklin.

Mr Jones, 57, said: "I had a string quartet piece already written.

"The opening movement perfectly carried the sentiment of how I felt regarding Meredith and the tragedy surrounding her death."

Miss Kercher, 21, was killed while studying in Italy in 2007.

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were originally convicted of her murder but on October 3 this year won an appeal against their conviction.

Mr Jones has never met the Kercher family, but hopes to get in contact before the concert, planned for spring next year.

He said: "The family came out during the trial and were angry that they felt Meredith had been forgotten while the media concentrated on the American girl.

"I completely agreed and began thinking about what I could do.

"I am hoping to film the concert as well. Profits from ticket sales and sales of a DVD will go towards any cause the family want."

A composition of his, Dark Music, based around a poem from Edward Storey, will also be performed in the concert, named Soliloquy for Meredith.

Miss Jacklin, a mezzo-soprano from Forest Hill, London, said : "I was honoured to be asked. It is a wonderful idea to remember someone in such an immortal way as through a piece of music."

Mr Jones, who has written operas, orchestral pieces and chamber music, added: "The music in this presentation is just one person's tribute to the stranger he never knew, and yet is so important to be remembered."
