Boris Johnson has launched his crime manifesto for London.
The Conservative MP who is hoping to replace Ken Livingstone as London's mayor in May's election says he wants to see more cops on public transport.
He also pledged to tackle gun and knife crime as a priority.
Speaking at the launch of his manifesto yesterday Mr Johnson said: "I want London to maintain its position as the world's number one financial centre. I want us to encourage the brightest and the best to come here. I want pensioners to feel safe to venture from their homes. I want people to believe it is worth reporting crime. I want the knives and guns off our streets.
"Today I set out my plan to make London safer. A plan that tackles a range of issues from bad behaviour on public transport to the way our communities are planned and built.
"I reject the fatalism and defeatism of the Labour Mayor. I reject the assumption that we can do nothing."
Mr Johnson promised to trial live CCTV on buses and having an extra 50 British Transport Police (BTP) at outer London's most crime-ridden stations.
Lib Dem opponent Brian Paddick, a former police officer, branded Mr Johnson "clueless about crime" and pointed out the mayor had no control over the budget of the BTP.
Mr Livingstone said the manifesto was hypocritical since Tories had voted against every budget which increased police numbers.

As a longtime supporter of Boris I hope he will allow Londoners to hire their own private security forces to patrol their neighbourhoods keeping the hoodie riffraff out. Yes it will cost us more but for those of us that can afford it we should be allowed to go down this route.
Vote Boris for mayor in May!

Eton to Oxford to Henley. Does this man really know what it's like to grow up, go to school, use hopsitals, public transport, live somewhere other than Chelsea, etc etc in London? Anyone but him please.

One of the biggest issues right now is teenagers on buses. If free travel isn't removed I'd like to see a simple thing happen, that wouldn't require such bold changes as 50 extra transport police. Have the police, who apparently walk around our local communities, hop onto and off of buses regularly.
Imagine a problem area with unruly kids. A policeman jumps on the bus one stop before and off again one stop after. He can then continue his duties, but has been on the bus to prevent issues with the kids, been a visible presence to deter criminals and has probably also given a boost to the driver (and passengers).
Is there really any scientific calculation behind adding 50 extra transport police, or is it just a nice round number? I think my suggestion would be great for the buses. As for the train, well I've never ever seen a policeman on a train, of any variety. If these 50 extra people were recruited/re-allocat
ed I can bet that 4 years from now I'd probably be saying the same thing.

Let Boris be mayor! Just because he never grew up in a slum in a sink estate, nor attended a rotten school doesn't prevent him being right for the job. From the way he speaks, Livingstone fulfills all these requirements, whiney uneducated voice, slovenly appearance, boorish manners. Yet is he any good as mayor? He is a lousy role model for youth, he simply represents scum rising to the top. Vote for Boris!!!!

I find it really embarassing to read comments like 'he didn't grow up in a slum'. Does this mean communist Labour want us all to live in slums? Well I grew up in one and do not want to go back nor do I want to go back to rubbish Labour.
I am sure the communist biased The Guardian can find better photo's they seem to quickly find them for moped man Newman, putt, put, putt ...

It needs more than police patrols on buses. I was on one in Richmond, two police got on, there was all hell breaking loose upstairs. I looked forward to some action but they didn't even go upstairs and gott off at the next stop.
