AFC Wimbledon supporters will be given the chance to swap their place on the stands for a position on the pitch during a testimonial match.

The match, to be held on Saturday, August 4, before the club’s game against West Ham, will honour the club’s player-turned-manager Simon Bassey, who has been with the club since its inception in 2002.

Former Wimbledon and Tottenham Hotspur full-back Ben Thatcher and Jon Main – who gained permission to play from his club Welling United – will be playing alongside fans, who can bid for one of 16 spots on the team in an online auction.

A club spokesman said: “In addition to glory on the pitch, those lucky enough to win a spot on the team will each take home a piece of club history in the form of the commemorative white strip worn by players in AFC Wimbledon’s Football League debut against Bristol Rovers last year.”

The full list of players confirmed for the exhibition match are: Simon Bassey, Keith Ward, Rob Ursell, Jon Main, Sean Daly, Joe Sheerin, Noel Frankum, Matt Everard, Steve Butler, Martin Randall, Ryan Gray, Andy Little, Ben Thatcher, Chris Gell.
