Schools will come together on Thursday to celebrate the release of brown trout into the Wandle River.

The event, which marks the beginning of the second decade of the Wandle Trust’s inspirational educational programme, will see students from Wandsworth set free trout hatchings which have been previously nurtured in their classrooms.

Burntwood Secondary, Furzedown Primary, Linden Lodge School, Sheringdale Primary and Thomas’s Clapham are amongst the seven schools that plan to release the hatchings into the Wandle River at a celebratory event on March 29.

The occasion will be open to the public and will provide trout hats, masks and feature colorful banners on display. It will take place at 10.30am in Morden Hall Park.

The historical Wandle River, which was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, was once a famous trout fishery which came to an end in the 1940’s when the fish sadly died out due to pollution.

Thanks to the efforts of local students brown trout are now once again thriving in the river.

The Living Wandle project to save endangered species was supported by the Western Riverside Environmental Fund and the Thames Water company.

Other schools taking part in the programme include Sutton Avenue Primary and Sutton Grammar.
