Trains running and New Malden station reopened after death on tracks

New Malden station has reopened following the death of a person hit by a train this afternoon.

Police and ambulance crews who attended the incident, in which a person was hit by the 1.11pm Waterloo to Shepperton train on platform four, have now left.

Blaise Haylock, who works in Bar Malden which backs on to platform 4, said: “All I saw was the police. I can only see there when I go out the back for a cigarette.

“There were about five [police officers] standing outside the station and it was cordoned off.

“Next I saw floods of people walking towards the bus stop, obviously because of the trains not running.”

A worker at Chicco cafe under C1 tower, who did not want to be named, said: “I just saw the ambulance and police. There were a couple of them, and later the private ambulance.

“It was not nice. It’s horrible at this time before Christmas.”

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “BTP were called to New Malden rail station following the report of a person being struck by a train.

“BTP and Metropolitan Police officers attended the incident, which was reported to police at 1.11pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics from London Ambulance Service also attended but the person was declared dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the person and inform their next of kin."

South West Trains said all lines had trains running on them but with delays.

Disgraceful from South West Trains yet again.

This incident happened at 13.11 and this story was posted at 16.01, which means that the emergency services had cleared the station to re-open in less than three hours, which is not at all bad.

South West Trains had the cheek to claim that 'severe delays until the end of the day's service' were due to this unfortunate incident. How can this be the case? Sure, it might take a couple of hours to 'get trains back into the right place', but there is no excuse to blame delays on this 9 hours after the track has fully reopened.

It has been another disastrous week on SWT - my 15 minute journey has taken more than 50 minutes on 4 separate occasions.

When will they be brought to account?

Glad to see DB your sympathies for the person who was killed and of course their greiving family. I have witnessed a jumper and the aftermath is not at all pleasant so if it only took 9hrs to clear it up that in mind is amazing. Also spare a thought for the Train Driver who will now be un shock. So sorry that you were possibly delayed try taking a bus instead.l

I think that is a little unfair.

I have every sympathy for the jumper, the family and the train driver and was certainly not having a Jeremy Clarkson style 'selfish' rant.

It is awful that a person can get to a bad enough place to want to do this, but the fact is that the line was opened again by 4pm and SWT should not have taken another 9 hours to get services running properly. I'd have the same complaint if it was vandalism or a derailment that caused the problem.
