A couple washed out of their home by last month's floods have called for better drainage in the streets of Wimbledon.

Matthew Neil and Sarah Holliday are still living in temporary accomodation, after the floors of their flat were covered in three inches of water.

Mr Neil, a software developer, returned from work on August 26 to find the huge runoff of water in the area had overwhelmed drains outside the studio flat in Worple Road Mews.

Filthy Water had washed through it, damaging carpets and a computer. Criticising the area's drainage, he said: "Something needs to be done - what's there is not fit for purpose."

Miss Holliday said: "I live in fear that a flood like this will happen again and nobody seems to be moving on improving the overall system for everyone."

She said when flood warnings were announced for the area she had contacted Thames Water, Merton Council, and the Environment Agency but was told she had to take action to protect the home herself.
