Students across Merton have discovered their A-level grades, which were revealed this morning.

More of the borough's schools than ever hosted the exams this summer, with 11 sixth forms and colleges entering teenagers for them. Students who missed out on the grades needed for a university place this year face a sharp rise in tuition fees for courses starting next September.

One of the sixth forms handing out results was the independent Wimbledon High School in Mansel Road, where 29 per cent of grades awarded were A*s.

Headmistress Heather Hanbury said: "The girls have worked extremely hard, supporting each other and inspired and encouraged by their tutors.

"They can be proud that they have achieved academic success whilst continuing the many pursuits that make them fully rounded individuals. School is about so much more than exam results – although on this day, that is of course what we are all focusing on."

South Thames College in Morden said their sixth form students acheived "fantastic" A-Level results, with the overall success rate rising to 93 per cent(up from 90 per cent last year).

The college's principal, Sue Rimmer OBE, said: “Over three quarters of our students go on to higher education and we are very proud of the important role we play in preparing them for the next step on their chosen pathway.”
