Nature lovers are celebrating the news their local park has won premier league status.

South Park Gardens in Wimbledon has been handed a Green Flag award for the first time. The award, given by a group of environmental charities, recognises green spaces in top quality condition with a welcoming atmosphere and good facilities.

Three other Merton parks – John Innes Park, Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field and Colliers Wood Recreation Ground – also kept their Green Flag status in this year’s list.

The scheme is run by charities Keep Britain Tidy, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, and GreenSpace. This year 1,200 parks in Britain won Green Flag awards.

Councillor Andrew Judge, Merton Council’s cabinet member for environmental sustainability, said: “This is great news.

“It is wonderful to see our parks rewarded for being among the best in the UK.”
