Croydon Tramlink left off Underground map because of 'clutter'

The Croydon Tramlink is to be left off the London Tube map despite its key future connecting east and west London.

London Assembly member Steve O’Connell slammed Transport for London’s refusal to include the 28km Tramlink on the map, which it felt would add to existing “clutter”.

The transport body has always argued the tram network should not be included because it does not include two connections to TfL-run lines.

But that situation is due to change when the new East London Line extension to West Croydon becomes operational in June.

Mr O’Connell said the only indication of the Tramlink on the Tube map would be a small tram symbol next to West Croydon and Wimbledon stations.

He said: “The Tramlink is a vital service for south Londoners and should be on the tube map. People need to know how to get around easily.

“When the East London line is extended to West Croydon, the tram will be a vital connection all the way to Wimbledon, making it essential that it’s on the official London transport map.

“TfL’s view that a vital service for thousands of south Londoners is nothing but ‘clutter’ is short-sighted. London transport maps should be for everyone in the capital, not just inner London services. I intend to take this matter up with the Mayor.”

Maybe the Mayor was too embarrassed to include Croydon Tramlink as it would be a constant reminder that he cancelled the extension to Crystal Palace.
