Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Mitcham woman this week.

Officer were made alerted after two women were admitted to a south London hospital on Monday April 24.

A woman, said to be in her mid-60s, was admitted in a critical condition. She subsequently died on Wednesday April 27.

Another woman, in her early 40s, was also admitted but later discharged after treatment.

Police have since been to a home in Lavender Avenue, where neighbours believe a mother and daughter, who were both disabled, lived.

A police car was stationed outside the house overnight. Officers were seen searching through bins and carrying evidence bags into the property.

A neighbour said they were asked by police officers on Monday whether they had heard screaming before the ambulance arrived.

Formal identification of the woman has not yet been made and the cause of death is currently unknown.

An inquiry has been launched by Merton police and no arrests have been made.
