The people of Bromley and Chislehurst have been named the ‘smartest’ in London.

Rankings, dominated by areas across south London, show the constituencies where most smart meters for monitoring energy usage have been installed.

There have been 7,150 meters installed in Bromley and Chislehurst homes so far, with 6,710 in Bexleyheath and Crayford and 6,590 in Croydon North.

The figures were published by British Gas as it installed its three millionth domestic smart meter this month.

Meters help people become more savvy by showing how much energy is being used in near real-time, in pounds and pence, allowing customers to see how much they are using and know exactly how much it is costing.

Bromley resident Clive Thompson recently had a meter installed and said: “Living in a big house, we were really keen to understand how much energy we use.

“We’ve definitely changed our behaviour now we can see exactly what we’re using and when.

“We’ve reprogrammed the timer on our boiler so we don’t heat the house when we don’t need to and it’s really interesting to see which appliances use lots of energy and those that use very little. We’re far more aware of what we’re using now which is helping us to be more energy efficient.”
