A mother and son were rescued from a burning house in Wimbledon this morning.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters rushed to the house in Vineyard Hill Road at 10am this morning, which has been left with damage to half of the first floor and part of the second floor.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Wimbledon station manager Charlie Hanks said: "Firefighters did a very good job getting the fire under control and stopping it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

"A mother and son were in the house at the time and thankfully were alerted to the blaze by their smoke alarm and escaped unhirt.

"Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm one very level of your home and the safest option is to have these linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home."

It took fire crews from Wimbledon, Mitcham, Wandsworth, Tooting and Battersea just over half an hour to put out the fire this morning.
