CHAMBER choir Sonoro is performing Rachmaninoff’s Vespers next week, and Wimbledon Station commuters may be fortunate enough to earn a free sneak preview.

The Wimbledon-based group, formed earlier this year, is set to perform in the borough for the first time at Sacred Heart Church on Thursday September 22.

The concert is set to start at 8pm, but prior to that the group of professional singers will be at Wimbledon Station serenading travellers as they return home from a day of work.

The 16 member ensemble, created in just six months by Wimbledon Choral Society director of music Neil Ferris and director of music of St John the Baptist, Wimbledon for the past 10 years, Michael Higgins, hope to showcase their abilities as they take on what is considered to be one of the greatest musical achievements to come out of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The event is followed by Sonoro’s first performance in the Wimbledon International Music Festival on Saturday November 12. In contrast to Rachmaninoff, this performance will be of David Fanshawe’s African Sanctus written in 1972. The group will be joined by Wimbledon Youth Choir, Merton Music Foundation Young Voices and Blackbeat Percussion.
