Mitcham Lane has reopened after a suspected shooting this afternoon.

Mike Padhiar, who works in Nicholls Motor Spares in Mitcham Lane, said he heard several shots being fired.

He said: "I was in the shop when it happened. As far as I know there was some gunfire. I heard the sound and then a lot of police came."

Another worker on Mitcham Lane, who asked to remain anonymous said armed police had told everyone to stay indoors.

She said: "Apparently someone fired two shots out there. I heard there were two cartridges found but I don't know if that's true.

"There were a lot of police here. They were all armed.

"I don't think anyone was arrested."

The Metropolitan police confirmed they were called at 3.10pm to "reports of shots fired."

At 5pm this evening, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan police said: "Officers are currently on scene.

"To date no victim has been found, and there are no arrests. Enquiries continue."

Wandsworth police tweeted to say they had closed the road at 3.45pm this afternoon. It was reopened at 4.30pm.

Twitter user Pierre Mairesse took a picture of multiple police cars in the road, and said he had been told by police that it was a "firearms incident".

Tailbacks are being experienced in the surrounding areas.
