A man has been arrested after armed police were called to Wimbledon station to reports of a man believed to have a gun. 

Armed police initally went to Wimbledon station after they were called shortly before 9am this morning to reports of a "male seen in possession of an item believed to be a firearm".

At 11.30am, Merton police confirmed that a member of the public saw a man "acting strangely on a tram on his way to Wimbledon", and police were contacted after the man seemed to drop a bag "which was deemed potentially suspicious". 

However, later this afternoon police said the man had been on a train from Clapham Junction to Wimbledon station.

A spokesman for Merton police added: "He was quickly identified by local officers and an armed police unit attended as a precaution.

"The address, near to Kingston Road, junction Lower Downs Road, had appropriate cordons quickly put in place. A search of the address is currently underway, with the male detained."

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of a class B drug. As of 6.30pm this evening he remained in custody at a west London police station.

The Met Police said the incident was not being treated as terror-related, and that no shots had been fired.

Police were in Lower Downs Road at 9.30am this morning before moving to Dennis Park Crescent.

Witnesses said several police officers carrying guns are warned residents to stay indoors and members of the public to stay back.

Former councillor Peter Walker was cycling down the road when he was warned to stay away. 

Mr Walker said: "The police are all tooled up. I can see around nine of them now, all with helmets and carrying those big guns. 

"They are telling us to stay back."

He added: "This doesn't happen in Wimbledon in the summer."

Raj Shah, who lives in Kingston Road, said he saw "seven or eight" police cars driving past at 9.30am this morning. 

Mr Shah said: "There are 15 to 20 policemen, maybe more. They won't let us go down Dennis Park Crescent or Burstow Road, and they have closed the House of Spice restaurant. 

"The whole area is totally blocked up."

Twitter user Bambina said her mother had been warned to stay in her house by police, and added: "Apparently there are a lot of them. All in heavy duty gear."

In a text message, her mother said police had been there since 9.45am this morning and said: "All commandos with machine guns and shields. I don't know what's happening. 

"They've asked me to stay in till it's cleared. Lower Downs [Road] is full of police cars and ambulances."

A 10.30am, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan police said police were called shortly before 9am this morning to reports of man "seen in possession of an item believed to be a firearm in the Wimbledon area. 

"Local officers, including armed officers, attended Wimbledon train station in an attempt to locate the man. 

He remains outstanding at this time and enquiries continue."

The spokeswoman added that this was not being treated as a terror related incident.

Roads have now re-opened.
