Police are searching the River Wandle for suspected firearms thrown into the water by a man stopped by armed officers in Carshalton.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Trident gangs team, supported by firearms cops, pulled over two vehicles in Middleton Road at 9.29pm.
One man fled and was seen to throw something into the river near the Goat Road bridge, close to the border with Mitcham.
He and two other people were detained by police and searched for guns but were not formally arrested as no weapons were found.
One of the men suffered a knee injury as he was detained and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police divers were continuing to search the river this morning.
Part of Middleton Road is cordoned off between Goat Road and Budge Lane.
