Primary school students in Wimbledon have raised £800 for the Save the Children charity through their Build A Den Day activity.

Each student at Hollymount School, in Cambridge Road, brought £2 and built a den using boxes, bubble wrap, and packing tape donated by Britannia Sandersteads on June 10.

Philippa Jackson, head teacher at Hollymount, said: “It was about getting the children to understand that not everyone in the world has somewhere to live or shelter.

Wimbledon Times:

"We had an assembly and talked to them about the possible reasons that children might not have a roof over their heads, maybe an earthquake or a flood or maybe because they were a refugee.”

The school’s council selects the charities receiving support from Hollymount each year, and chose Save the Children for the first time. Typically, the school usually selects charities supporting children.

Mrs Jackson said: “They have an empathy for other children, they want to help them and they understand what other children’s lives are like.”

Wimbledon Times:

Britannia Sandersteads are a removals and storage company based in Surrey managing contracts with homes and businesses, and contributed packing materials for the school’s event.

Stuart Almandras, director of Britannia Sandersteads, said: “Community matters and we liked the idea of upcycling as we recycle our own cartons too.

Wimbledon Times:

"Our vehicle and crew were just returning from multi-deliveries in Europe, therefore we had ample materials to offer. We hope the children enjoyed their day and continue with these great projects in the future.”
