A schoolboy from Raynes Park has managed to raise almost £1,300 for Cancer Research UK by organising a cake sale.

Joshua Turner, nine, was hoping to beat last year’s record of £700 at his cake sale outside Raynes Park Station on Saturday, May 21, but did not expect to almost double that total.

Joshua’s proud mother, Jill Turner, said: “I think we are still a little taken aback by it.

“He was over the moon. We never thought it would be so much. It was just a great, great response. We had so many people coming down and we completely sold out.

“The community support was so nice, there was just so much support for Joshua. He was so proud.

“It was quite overwhelming, it was just so lovely to see. I was blubbing.”

Mrs Turner, who lives with her family in Linkway, works as a community special needs dental nurse as well as being an official fundraiser and volunteer for Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Turner previously lost her grandmother to the disease. Her mother has also been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and her aunt with breast cancer.

Local businesses donated dozens of cakes to the St Matthews C of E schoolboy, including the Co-Op, Lime and Thyme, Absolute Abode, The Olive Garden, Starbucks, Waitrose, Cakeology, The Cake Parlour and Gail’s Bakery.

Mrs Turner said the family also received some donations from people who wanted to support them without buying any cakes, helping them to reach their £1,270 total.
