The court date has been released for country music legend and Wimbledon resident Mervyn Conn after he was charged with the rape and indecent assault of a teenager.

Mr Conn, 81, of Convent Way, Wimbledon, will appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Thursday, March 3, to face the sexual assault charges, alleged to have taken place in the 1970s.

He faces one count of raping a woman under 16 years-old and one count of raping a woman aged 16 years or over, as well as one count of attempted buggery with a woman.

Mr Conn was also charged with three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16 and one count of indecent assault on a woman over 16-years-old.

The assaults are alleged to have taken place in the Wimbledon, Westminster and Wembley areas of London between 1975 and 1977 when the woman was a teenager.

Mr Conn, who helped to launch the career of country music icon Johnny Cash, was arrested at Gatwick Airport in July 2014.

He was charged on Tuesday, February 2, at Sutton police station.
