There is an alternative way to spend Valentine’s Day with your loved one this year by planting trees at Wimbledon Park.

Friends of Wimbledon Park are holding a memorable occasion to rejuvenate Horse Close Wood following a £3,000 grant from the Mayor of London’s office, writes Shona Duthie.

The aim of the day out is to mark the Capability Brown 300th anniversary as well as give the park a new lasting legacy and to screen the Wimbledon Park Road car park.

People are encouraged to come along with family members and friends.

The event is scheduled to run from 10am to1pm on Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14 and is free to join.

It is advised to arrive suitably dressed for digging and planting and to bring something to eat and drink for the break.

The wood dates back to the 17th century and it was in 1760 where it became a part of Capability Brown’s landscape.

In 2004 the Parks Department of London Borough of Merton and the Wimbledon Park Heritage Group laid paths with woodchips left over from the pollarding of the trees.

Once again the woods are searching for helpers to take part in something truly special.

It would certainly say I love you with a sprinkle of everlasting love by planting a tree which could last a lifetime.
