Merton libraries are set to celebrate National Libraries Day by offering the community a variety of taster sessions on Saturday.

Award-winning libraries across Merton will offer newcomers and existing library members a range of diverse activities to showcase what they have to offer, writes Shona Duthie.

Morden, West Barnes, Mitcham and Raynes Park libraries will kick off the day with a range of children’s activities which include free balloons if children take out five books or more.

Wimbledon Library will hold IT support sessions with the pop-up Colliers Wood offering Spanish lessons for beginners.

Pollards Hill Library will take a different approach as it hosts a general knowledge quiz for adults in the afternoon with refreshments being provided.

Chief executive of the Libraries Taskforce, Kathy Settle will be visiting her nearest library in Wimbledon on the day.

Merton Council’s member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “These activities are not just a one day thing; they’re part of what goes on week in week out and I want everyone in Merton to enjoy them to the fullest.

“It’s tremendous to know that we’ve been singled out for a special visit by Kathy Settle and her team, and I’m sure she’ll enjoy her visit.”

Merton libraries are the home to some of the highest satisfaction and usage levels of any service in London and with the extended opening hours and free WI-FI they aim to cater for everyone’s needs.

National Libraries Day is an annual national campaign and takes places throughout the UK.

Its aim is to recognise the importance of libraries in igniting a love for books, reading and giving access to a wealth of information for the community.
