An unemployed 25-year-old has been charged with the murder of a Mitcham man and the attempted murder of another involved in the town centre axe fight last week.

Prashad Sothilingam, of Edgehill Road, Mitcham, was charged today with the murder of an as-yet unidentified 26-year-old man in Holborn Way after a fight said to have involved up to 40 men of Tamil origin.

Mr Sothilingam was arrested yesterday by detectives investigating the mass brawl.

He has been charged with murder, attempted murder of a 29-year-old on the same day, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He is the seventh man to be arrested as part of the ongoing investigation and will appear before Wimbledon magistrates on Monday.

Six men aged 34, 21, 37, 40, 27 and 21 have previously been arrested in connection with the brawl and remain bailed to return to south London police stations in early December.

The victim died on Wednesday having suffered severe head injuries in the brawl.

Two other men, a 26-year-old and a 29-year-old, also received serious injuries and were still in hospital at the end of this week, although their condition is not thought to be critical.
