Time is running out to give feedback to Merton Council over their proposed £5 million cuts to adult social care.

The cuts, which were proposed as part of a budget released on October 16, include scrapping meals on wheels services for the elderly and disabled and decommissioning the charities Imagine Independence and the South Thames Crossroads care service.

October 16: Meals on wheels may be scrapped in fresh wave of spending cuts

October 21: Facing the axe: Meals on wheels and adult social care services, but at least council tax will stay frozen

Imagine Independence works with adults with mental health issues, and helps them with employment support, peer support and social inclusion.

The South Thames Crossroads care service offers a variety of support for carers, ranging from providing help preparing meals, respite breaks and end of life care.

The budget also mentioned that a review would be carried out into the ‘Supporting People’ programme which aims to increase the stability and independence of vulnerable people, including those with mental health issues, learning and physical disabilities, the homeless, teenage parents and people affected by domestic violence.

According to the document, this may involve "reduced housing-related support for vulnerable people by 17 per cent in cost terms. This affects the numbers we could support and the range of support we could provide.

"In turn this would reduce the housing options available to vulnerable people."

Speaking on October 15, before the release of the budget, leader of Merton Council Stephen Alambritis said he was committed to upholding the ‘July Principles’.

He said: "In July 2011, in a full council meeting, we said we would apply some principles about how we arrive at a balanced budget. And we agreed that we would like after children and adults in social care."

The consultation period on the cuts will run until Monday, December 7. Feedback can be provided by completing a survey on the council website or emailing your views to ASCconsultation@merton.gov.uk.

Public meetings to discuss the proposals will be held on Monday, November 30 at 11am and Wednesday, December 2, and 6.30pm in Vestry Hall, Mitcham.
