A full scale boat made from driftwood, an aeroplane made from tea chests and newspaper and a fully restored 1950s car have gone on show in an exhibition celebrating the art of escape.

Conceptual artist Christopher Dobrowolski, who released a book, ‘Escape’, detailing the making of each vehicle last year, will be displaying his work at Wimbledon Space, in Wimbledon College of Art until late October.

The exhibition was inspired by a makeshift boat he made out of driftwood when studying at Humberside University, Hull.

Mr Dobrowolski made the sculpture following a comment made by a visiting lecturer at the university.

Mr Dobrowolski said: “I have chosen to revisit this body of work. I felt there was an interesting poetic irony in bringing these vehicles back into an art college.”

Vehicles in the exhibition include the ‘Flying Flea’, an aeroplane made out of tea chests, newspaper and powered by a Citroen 2cv engine, and a restored Triumph Herald Estate car that belonged to the father of Mr Dobrowolski.

CHRIS DOBROWOLSKI: ESCAPE will run from October 2-23, 10am-5pm at Wimbledon Space, Wimbledon College of Art, Merton Hall Road, SW19 3QA. Entry to the exhibition is free.
